Mechanics of Elastomers at High Temperatures
نویسنده
چکیده
"Among elastomers commercially available, several are reasonably stable for prolonged periods at temperatures above 200•C (392•F); but at such temperatures, their strength characteristics are inadequate for many present day applications." This statement by Thor Smith in 1962 is just as true is 1980, pointing out that the polymer industry, if not mature, is certainly on a broad plateau. The intention of this paper is to present to the engineering oriented individual a review of this technology in which books are compressed into paragraphs. My apologies are given to the serious students of polymer chemistry.

Thermo-mechanics of Elastomers Undergoing Scission and Cross-linking at High Temperatures
This paper focuses on the effect of high temperatures on an elastomeric component. There are two sources of temperature rise, a hot environment and internal heating due to mechanical loading such as occurs during cyclic loading. Internal mechanical heating can lead to a substantial temperatures occuring within the component. When the temperature of the material becomes sufficiently high, macrom...
متن کاملA Study of Na/K Feldspar Solid Solution Using Statistical Mechanics
Thermal behavior of various solid feldspars are different, namely those of bivalent cations show no change in the distribution of Al and Si atoms, whereas feldspars of univalent cations become more disordered with raising temperature. In the latter case Al atoms migrate from the sites they occupe at low temperatures and interchange positions with the Si atoms. At high temperatures (but stil...
متن کاملShape memory effect exhibited by smectic-C liquid crystalline elastomers.
It was long expected and recently shown that main-chain liquid crystalline elastomers (MC-LCEs) may serve as high performance soft actuators due to a coupling of their intrinsic characteristics of high, yet labile, ordering and network strain. Here, we present the synthesis of new siloxane-based smectic MC-LCEs. These new materials exhibit a unique thermomechanical behavior known as the shape m...
متن کاملEffect of vulcanization temperature and dental stone colour on colour degradation of maxillofacial silicone elastomers
BACKGROUND Colour degradation is a major problem in maxillofacial silicone elastomers. Recent studies have focused on colour stability and the mechanical properties of the silicone elastomers. A colour match is also essential for the acceptance of the prosthesis by the patient. The aim of this study is to assess the colour degradation of the silicone elastomer after being moulded in different c...
متن کاملThe Fracture Mechanics Concept of Creep and Creep/Fatigue Crack Growth in Life Assessment
There is an increasing need to assess the service life of components containing defect which operate at high temperature. This paper describes the current fracture mechanics concepts that are employed to predict cracking of engineering materials at high temperatures under static and cyclic loading. The relationship between these concepts and those of high temperature life assessment methods is ...
